TN cases dip below 2,000 after 4 months
CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu reported less than 2,000 COVID-19 positive cases ater 114 days on Monday, officials said on Tuesday.
Health officials said the state added 1,971 new cases on Monday. There were 28 fatalities.
The state had seen 1,971 new cases on March 26, but a spiralling began ater that.
The state’s caseload stands at 25,37,373 as of Tuesday.
The official death count in total is 33,752. COVID-19 positive cases and 28 deaths taking the tally to 25,37,373 and toll to 33,752 on the day.
Chennai added 147 cases. With this, the total number of persons affected by the pandemic in the metropolis has touched 5,36,351.
Among neighbouring districts, Chengalpatu registered 116 new cases, Kancheepuram 43 and Thiruvallur 66.
Cuddalore and Coimbatore today witnessed 90 and 209 new cases, respectively.
On the positive side, 2,558 patients were discharged from various hospitals in Tamil Nadu on Monday. With this, the total number of recoveries in the state has touched 24,76,339.
With the decline in daily cases, demands have risen for wider relaxations.
Responding to demands for the reopening of educational institutions, Chief Minister MK Stalin said on Tuesday the government will hold a discussion with parents, teachers and officials before taking a decision.
“The current situation will be discussed with the parents, teachers and officials and an appropriate decision will be taken,” he said.
Final results of Class 12 students from State Board schools were announced on Monday, and 816,000 students have passed. The board exams, scheduled to be held earlier this year, were cancelled owing to the pandemic.
Tamil Nadu has atracted investments to the tune of Rs285 billion at an investors conclave held in Chennai on Tuesday.
Chief Minister MK Stalin said that the aim of his government is to make Tamil Nadu the best state in Asia.
The state has brought in 49 projects on Tuesday, involving a total investment of Rs285.08 billion, offering 83,482 jobs.
At the investment conclave atended by Stalin, Memoranda of Understanding were signed for 35 new projects entailing a total of Rs17,141 crore, that would generate more than 5,000 jobs. At the event, Stalin laid the foundation stone for nine projects.
