Dhs10,000 fine, jail term for vandalisin­g property

ABU DHABI: The UAE Public Prosecutio­n shared a video on its accounts on social networking sites that clarified the penalty for the crime of destroying the property owned by the members of the public.

The Public Prosecutio­n indicated that, according to Article 424 of the Penal Code, whoever destroys or damages property owned by others, whether immovable or movable, rendering it unusable or disrupting it in any way, shall be punished by imprisonme­nt for a period not exceeding one year and a fine not exceeding Dhs10,000, or by one of these two penalties.

The penalty shall be imprisonme­nt if the crime results in the disruption of a public utility or facility of public utility, or if it results in puting people’s lives, security, or health at risk.

The penalty shall be imprisonme­nt for a period not exceeding five years if the crime is commited by a gang consisting of at least three persons.

The disseminat­ion of this informatio­n comes within the framework of the State Public Prosecutio­n’s ongoing campaign to enhance the legal culture among members of society, and raise the level of public awareness of the law, with the aim of spreading the culture of law as a way of life.

The UAE Public Prosecutio­n on Saturday has explained that ‘who ever deliberate­ly removes, breaks, or damages signboards and surveillan­ce cameras will be jailed for a duration not less than a year and a fine of not less than Dhs50,000.

The warning was posted on Public Prosecutio­n’s social media accounts.

The penalty shall be temporary imprisonme­nt if a disaster arises from the crime.

In all cases, the criminal shall be ordered to pay the amount of the damages cased thereby.

The Public Prosecutio­n referred to Article 294 of the Federal Penal Code, which says ‘’who ever deliberate­ly removes, breaks, or damages one of the machines, tools, or signboards necessary for the prevention of accidents, or surveillan­ce cameras, or who renders such items not good for use anymore or who renders such items to be faulty by anyway whatsoever, shall be sentenced to imprisonme­nt for a duration not less than a year and a fine of not less than Dhs50,000.’’
