DUBAI: Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council, officially opened the 41st edition of Gitex Global x Ai Everything, coinciding with Expo 2020 Dubai at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) on Sunday. The Crown Prince of Dubai said: “Dubai and the UAE continue to demonstrate their commitment to supporting the global technology community in accelerating growth and innovation, boosting resilience and driving its transformation agenda in the post-pandemic phase.

In line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, Dubai continues to provide a high-powered plaform for the international technology industry to network, explore partnerships and share ideas that can shape a new future for the sector. The 41st Gitex Global x Ai Everything is one of the few international industry events that features such a vast scale and diversity of technology professionals, companies and solutions. The strong response the event has drawn from the global sector is testament to the trust the sector places in Dubai as a safe destination for international trade shows.”

Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed later went on a tour of the event accompanied by Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Media Council; Sheikh Mansour bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum; and a number of dignitaries, including Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General of the Dubai World Trade Centre Authority ( DWTCA) and Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM).

On the inaugural day of Gitex Technology Week 2021, Dubai Customs launched I-box smart lockers for storing commercial items or valuable cargo carried on by inbound transit passengers.

The initiative enables travelers to keep their valuable goods in the airport customs centre on arrival without paying duty and collect them through self-clearance service on departure from the country.

Under the theme “Digital Trade for Safe, Sustainable Supply Chains”, Dubai Customs is taking part in this year’s Gitex with eight cuting-edge smart initiatives.

The participation highlights the goals of the organisation’s strategic plan 2021-2026 towards leading sustainable customs globally by furthering digitisation of services to facilitate trade, protect society and economy, and enhance people’s experience of customs as a service.

The I-box smart lockers project is set to speed up logistics and handling services for valuable cargo at the airport. The advanced initiative has cut down the process time for delivery of valuable items from 30 minutes to 1 minute only. The passenger can simply scan the QR code on the locker and use the OTP code sent to his phone number to unlock the locker and pay storage fees online without any paper work. These fireproof lockers boast high-end security systems and are easy to move from one place to another within the airport terminals.

“Dubai has established its global distinction and leadership on building innovative projects that ensure sustainable development in all fields, following the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai,” said Ahmed Mahboob Musabih, CEO of Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation and Director-general of Dubai Customs. “His Highness’s forward-looking vision of digital transformation and ongoing disruption of the way the government works has reinforced Dubai’s leading position as a global incubator for innovators and an atractive environment for businesses and investments.”

Ibrahim Al Kamali, Director of Passenger Operations Department at Dubai Customs, on his part said, “Dubai Customs seeks to make travelers happier by offering them quick and easy services that expedite entry procedures and enhance their experience, especially in light of the increasing numbers of traders transiting through Dubai.”

Meanwhile, UPS has launched the Forest of the Future initiative, through which each customer shipping a package at one of the UPS Expo 2020 counters will have a tree planted in their honour.

This is part of UPS’S commitment to helping deliver one of the most sustainable World Expos in history.

In addition, UPS will mitigate any carbon dioxide (CO2) by purchasing carbon offsets for each package. These shipments will be acknowledged with a digital carbon neutral certificate including the specific details of the carbon footprint and the offset purchased.

The Forest of the Future initiative is part of The UPS Foundation’s global commitment to climate action and UPS’S wider role as the Official Logistics Partner of Expo 2020 Dubai.

Customers will be able to select where they want to have their tree planted from countries in the Indian subcontinent, Middle East, Africa and Asia, including the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Japan. Part of The UPS Foundation’s pledge to plant 10,000 trees through the Forest of the Future will include 750 trees planted in the UAE by 16th October. Additionally, 2,025 trees will be planted in Japan where the next World Expo will be held in 2025.

“Through our partnership with Expo 2020 Dubai, UPS is elevating our sustainability initiatives and ensuring we leave a positive lasting legacy in the communities we serve,” said Laura Lane, USP’S Chief Corporate Affairs Officer. “As part of that effort, our Forest of the Future initiative will improve overall air quality by reducing carbon dioxide through our tree plantings.”

UPS recently released its Corporate Sustainability Report with a goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, including fueling 40 percent of ground operations with alternative fuels by 2025. Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is set to host a live demonstration of the ‘Using AI in Cycling Tracks’ solution at its stand at GITEX Technology Week 2021, which is a proof of concept (POC) developed by EVOTEQ, a digital transformation solutions provider.

This revolutionary solution aims to ensure safer roads for cyclists by deploying digital solutions that create a meaningful impact on people’s lives.

RTA had developed 463 kilometres of cycling track in 2020 with plans to increase the total length of cycling tracks in the emirate to 739 kilometres by 2026 with the aim of linking the most vital areas in the emirate with various public transport stations.

Mohammed Yousuf Al Mudharreb, CEO of RTA’S Corporate Technology Support Services Sector, said, “In designing the Smart Cycling Track, next-generation technologies such as the Internet of Things (IOT) and artificial intelligence (AI) have been used. The data gathered by this high-tech AI enabled plaform will be leveraged to detect cyclists, joyriders, including joggers, and scooter riders, on the track and determine the current track occupancy. The smart solution also identifies the speed at which the cyclists are traveling and detects if they are wearing a helmet. Moreover, further trend analysis will allow the collected data to predict and prevent critical cycling incidents like crowded tracks and accidents, and alert authorities of increased risk conditions based on the collected data.”

Deepak Balgobin, Minister of Technology, Communication and Innovation of the Republic of Mauritius, has recently visited the Dubai Smart Police Station (SPS) at Expo 2020 Dubai, which provides policing service to visitors of the global event round the clock without human intervention.
