Man caught with 4.9kg of cocaine jailed for 10 years

DUBAI: The Dubai Court of Appeal upheld a ruling issued by the Court of First Instance against a visitor from a Latin American country to be imprisoned for 10 years, fined Dhs50,000, and deported ater serving the terms, for bringing 4.9 kg of cocaine inside his bags.

The case dates back to last January, when a customs inspector at the Dubai Airport suspected the bags belonging to one of the arrivals to the country. According to the statement of the customs inspector in the investigat­ions, he stopped the convict and searched the bags, where he found 9 plastic bags containing white powder of cocaine weighing 4,900 grams. Accordingl­y, the convict was transferre­d to the police, where he was interrogat­ed about his atempt to pass drugs into the country.

In the investigat­ions, the convict admitted that he had met a person in a hotel in his homeland, where the later asked him to deliver that amount of drugs to a person in Dubai in return for $15,000.

ASIAN JAILED FOR ILLEGALLY SELLING SATELLITE CHANNEL DECODERS: The Dubai Criminal Court sentenced an Asian to one month in jail, fined him Dhs5,000 and ordered his store to be shut down for one month ater he was convicted of selling receivers that decode satellite channels without permission from an authorized channel agent.

The case dated back to July last year, when the Dubai Police’s Department of Anti-economic Crimes received a complaint from the exclusive distributo­rs and agents of satellite channels. According to the complaint, the defendant was selling receivers that opened and broadcast the complainan­ts’ satellite channels, using unlicensed receivers illegally brought from an Asian country without obtaining permission from the satellite channel agents.

A team from Dubai Police had verified the accuracy of the informatio­n and obtained a permission from the Dubai Public Prosecutio­n before they raided the defendant’s store, where three unlicensed satellite channel receivers were seized from the defendant’s possession.
