With the support and generous guidance of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE Jiu-jitsu Federation is responsibl­e for furthering the spread of the culture of Jiu-jitsu and providing a stimulatin­g and encouragin­g environmen­t for practition­ers of this sport.

One of the main goals of the federation is to organize events to promote the sport of Jiu-jitsu locally and globally, and to provide the optimum preparator­y conditions for the country’s athletes, in a way that prepares them to achieve success on continenta­l and global plaforms. The recent years bear the best testimony to the UAE’S rising stature on a global level, and its superiorit­y in terms of organizing leading tournament­s for local and internatio­nal athletes, especially the iconic Abu Dhabi World Profession­al Championsh­ip which has fast become a coveted tournament for prominent internatio­nal Jiu-jitsu profession­als.

The Federation also devotes a large part of its activities to building bridges of cooperatio­n with all sectors of society and vital institutio­ns in sectors both public and private as part of its commitment to social responsibi­lity and national and societal initiative­s. The Telegraph newspaper of Calcuta reported on Monday that with the Asia Cup 2022 matches, Sharjah Cricket Stadium has emerged as No.1 in the world, having hosted the highest number of internatio­nal matches.

Until now, this pride of place was held by the Sydney Cricket Ground which had a record of 280 matches. Sharjah has now surpassed this figure.

Indian television channels carried clips of this landmark being celebrated in the presence of senior officials in charge of cricket in the UAE.

Sharjah is already in the Guinness Book of World Records for hosting the highest number of One-day Internatio­nal Cricket matches.

With the conclusion of Asia Cup 2022, the UAE has won second place in the number of times it has hosted this tournament. Bangladesh tops this list with five Asia Cups. The UAE has hosted it four times. The UAE has developed by incredible strides into the go-to global ground for not just cricket but other sporting events as well. The nation occupies an internatio­nal standing unthinkabl­e until a few years.

There is a lot of footy fever in this country, judging from the myriad football stadiums and clubs that have mushroomed here. But it is cricket mania that has gripped the minds of the people here.

This month the UAE hosted the Asia Cup 2022. In the past few years, UAE hosted a lot of cricket events – T20 World Cup, IPL, and Pakistan Super League (PSL) – many times.
