DUBAI: The Dubai Court of Misdemeanors fined an Asian woman Dhs20,000 and obligated her to repay Dhs200,000, which she seized from an Arab investor through a fake deal to sell him cryptocurrency.

The case dates back to 2021, when an Arab investor lodged a complaint with the authorities, stating that he had been defrauded by an Asian woman. He reported that he knew a woman, who claimed a cryptocurrency “Bitcoin” dealer, and he expressed his desire to invest in it with a value of Dhs200,000.

Hevisitedthewoman’sofficeintheinternational City, where he handed her the aforementioned amount, and she transferred the amount to others. He expected to receive a notification that confirms completion of the purchase operation, but nothing came. The woman informed him that the notification might be delayed for some time, due to a technical malfunction in the system.

The investor waited for the notification of the completion of the deal for the next day, but he did not receive any notification, so he realised that he had been defrauded, and then he reported to the police.

A cop testified that he summoned the woman, who denied selling any cryptocurrency to the investor. She admited that he had given her the money to buy him a local currency of an Asian country, and transfer it to his account in her country based on his request. Therefore, she carried out what he requested through others who were present at the place.

The woman had nothing to prove her claim, so the Dubai Public Prosecution referred her to the Court on charges of fraud and breach of trust.

Recently, the Dubai Criminal Court sentenced a GCC citizen to one year in jail and fined him Dhs965,000, in addition to a temporary compensation of Dhs50,000 to the owner of a vehicle.

The court then referred the case to the competent court.

The suspect reportedly stole a Mclaren vehicle worth Dhs965,000 ater deceiving its owner and giving him a forged cheque of the amount, and then registered the vehicle under his name.
