PM leads tributes as top singer Vani passes away

TRIVANDRUM: The passing of hugely popular singer Vani Jayaram has come as a shock to the Malayalam film industry as hers was a much-loved voice in the state, she having sung more than 600 songs in a career that took off in 1973.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi lead tributes by tweeting, “the talented Vani Jairam Ji will be remembered for her melodious voice and rich works, which covered diverse languages and reflected different emotions. Her passing away is a major loss for the creative world. Condolence­s to her family and admirers. Om Shanti.” Popular Malayalam singer Sujatha said she was shocked and wished the news was not true.

“We used to regularly interact and meet. Ater her husband passed away, she became a loner as the two were deeply atached to one another. Her talent just cannot be expressed in words. I will now miss someone whom I always liked,” Sujatha said.

Another Malayalam singer, Madhu Balakrishn­an, said she had recently spent a lot of time with Vani and they were supposed to take part in a musical event in March.

“She was a really nice human being and I will miss her a lot,” Balakrishn­an said.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Police have registered a case under suspicious death over Vani’s passing away.

Vani, ater the passing away of her husband Jayaram in 2018, was living alone in her residence at Haddows road in Chennai.

A maidservan­t Malarkodi, who used to do daily chores at her residence, arrived at the home at 11am and even ater the repeated ringing of the bell, there was no response from inside.

She immediatel­y alerted Vani’s sister Uma and both of them entered the house with duplicate keys and found her dead on the floor of her bedroom. She had bruise marks on her forehead.

Police were informed and her body was taken to Kilpauk hospital, Chennai for postmortem.

However, a forensic team of Tamil Nadu police is conducting an inspection at the residence of Vani.

When contacted, Shekhar Deshmukh, DCP, Triplicane said that the police are conducting an investigat­ion and further details will be known only ater the postmortem report comes.
