Man behind bars in drugs case

- BY FOUAD ALI

The Supreme Federal Court rejected the appeal of a defendant convicted of owning 1.14 grammes of heroin for trafficking. He was also charged with abusing codeine and morphine.

The Appellate Court previously sentenced the defendant to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Dhs200,000 and two years in jail for the charge of drug abuse, to be followed by deportation, in addition to a fine of Dhs10,000.

The defendant said he was convicted of owning drugs for the purpose of trafficking, although it could not be proved, and the conviction was based on the statements of the judicial police.

As per details, judicial officers were alerted that a suspect had purchased drugs from the person who filed the appeal.

He was arrested and he told the police the drug belonged to the appellant.

They asked him to contact him to buy heroin.

The appellant was arrested redhanded when he gave heroin to the secret agent in return for money.

Lab reports proved the sample of the victim contained morphine and codeine.
