Broke trader tries rob­bing gold shop

an in sol­vent mus­cu­lar trader stormed a gold shop bran­dish­ing a meat cleaver then smashed his way through a glass façade to lee ar­rest, pros­e­cu­tors re­vealed on Sun­day.

The 50-year-old African trader had press­ing per­sonal needs to solve in his home coun­try. He pur­chased a meat cleaver and stormed the jew­ellery shop in Al Mu­raqqa­bat area at around 11:30am on Dec.10.2018.

He bran­dished it threat­en­ing to hack an Ira­nian em­ployee, 27, and a Filip­ina cashier, 38. Both switched the alarm on and con­tacted po­lice. On re­al­is­ing po­lice was com­ing he punched the glass façade, shat­ter­ing it.

\He jumped out and led the scene. Pros­e­cu­tors re­ferred him to the Dubai Crim­i­nal Court charg­ing him with at­tempted armed rob­bery. “Yes Sir,” he con­fessed be­fore the pre­sid­ing judge. The rul­ing was set for Jan.27.

In po­lice and pros­e­cu­tion records, the em­ployee nar­rated that he was in­side the shop when the de­fen­dant en­tered wear­ing a jacket and a cap.

“He or­dered me to pull out and sur­ren­der all the avail­able gold jew­ellery. He threat­ened to hack me with a meat cleaver the size of an arm. I pressed the early warn­ing sys­tem’s but­ton and also told the cashier to call the po­lice. The de­fen­dant shat­tered the glass door with his arm and led.”

The Filip­ina cashier ex­plained, “The mo­ment he saw me con­tact­ing the po­lice he smashed the glass door and ran away.” Po­lice in­ves­ti­ga­tors landed on his jacket in the neigh­bour­hood. He con­fessed upon ar­rest and re­vealed he threw the cleaver in a trash con­tainer.
