Tons of waste extracted from Khor Fakkan port

A team of 40 volunteers has dived to recover trash from the Fishermen Port in Khor Fakkan as part of Sharjah Museums Authority, SMA, annual-marine cleanup campaign, ‘Because We Care’.

The volunteers ished out two tons of trash including tyres, ish and traps, carpets, and other boat equipment. In addition to removing litter from the port, the campaign, which focused on the Khor Fakkan waterfront in its latest edition, educated ishermen and workers about waste products’ impact on marine life.

The ninth edition of the annual campaign was conducted by a team comprising volunteers from Sharjah Aquarium, part of SMA, Emirates Diving Centre, and in cooperatio­n with Khor Fakkan Municipal Council.

Government oficials and volunteers briefed attendees about the proper methods to discard waste items, such as oldish traps, nets, and ishing lines.

“This campaign relects the Sharjah Museums Authority’s strategy to implant an environmen­t-friendly culture, and foster inter-agency co-operation to cement Sharjah’s position as the Smiling Emirate,” said Manal Ataya, Director General of Sharjah Museums Authority.

She said that the initiative is aimed at raising awareness about environmen­t issues and instilling marine life conservati­on culture among members of the community, as part of the Emirate’s ambitions to promote a clean and sound environmen­t that relect its position as a hub for culture and tourism.
