Man ar­rested after 11-year-old boy killed in hit and run

A mo­torist has been ar­rested after an 11-year-old boy was killed in a hit and run.

The child, named lo­cally as Tay­lor Schoield, was treated by paramedics at the scene in Beswick, Manch­ester, but died of his in­juries in hos­pi­tal.


A grey Volk­swa­gen Golf be­lieved to have been in­volved in the col­li­sion in Al­bert Street shortly be­fore 6.10pm on Satur­day was found aban­doned nearby.

A 31-year-old man later at­tended a po­lice sta­tion and was ar­rested on sus­pi­cion of caus­ing death by dan­ger­ous driv­ing.


The sus­pect re­mains in cus­tody for ques­tion­ing, Greater Manch­ester Po­lice said.

Flo­ral trib­utes were tied to a lamp­post near the scene of the col­li­sion in Al­bert Street on Sun­day.


One mes­sage read: “No words will de­scribe how missed you will be lit­tle man x Rest in par­adise x.”

A black Manch­ester United away shirt was also tied to the post.

One neigh­bour said: “I didn’t know the lad to talk to but he loved my dog and would al­ways stroke him. You would see him ev­ery day at the shop on his bike. It’s so tragic.”

He said res­i­dents had com­plained about speed­ing ve­hi­cles on the road for some time.


PC Karl Horner, from the force’s se­ri­ous col­li­sion in­ves­ti­ga­tion unit, said: “This was a tragic in­ci­dent in which a young boy lost his life, and my thoughts are with his fam­ily at this unimag­in­ably di­fi­cult time.

“We have a man in cus­tody but our in­quiries con­tinue as we work to es­tab­lish the full cir­cum­stances which led to this col­li­sion.

“If you think you saw the driver of the grey VW Golf around the time of the col­li­sion, or if you wit­nessed what hap­pened, then please get in touch with us as soon as pos­si­ble.
