Knockout champions Chargers signalled their intention to keep the Goddard Enterprises Limited senior volleyball knockout crown by scoring a bruising five-sets win over the league kings Cawmere when the action continued on Wednesday night at the Wildey Gymnasium.

In a slug fest with both teams pounding the court just as regularly and viciously as each other’s bodies, Chargers took the battle 25-18, 2225, 26-24, 19-25, 15-13. The United States-based Ashan Jordan was superb in attack for Chargers.

He received tremendous support from the Harris brothers Romario and Nicholas with former Barbados setter Dale Addison filling the breach well in the absence of current national setter Alain London who was ill.

Barbados captain Shawn Simpson was almost unstoppable for Cawmere, hitting the ball from a height and with a force that threatened the life and limb of Chargers’ air and ground defenders. Jamaicans Mark Lewis and Robert Samuels were equally potent in attack for Cawmere.

It became an all out war in the fourth set with Cawmere battling to take the game to a decider with Simpson smacking a spike into the jaw of Nicholas to lock at 12-all which almost shaved some years off of the young barber’s life. Jordan took revenge at 15-18 with a hammer into the body of Samuels flooring the muscular opponent.

Great success

Addison proved to be the key in the decider as he found hitters to score a high percentage of his sets with Ramon Blades also unleashing Simpson and Lewis with great success. Chargers surged to 14-10 before a spiking error by Addison and two kills from Lewis raised hope for Cawmere. However, a kill from Romario capped a great night for him and Chargers.

Deacons men also continued on their winning path, but barely, after being held game and match point in the third set by Foundation United. A serving error by Darien Seale at 24-23 allowed Deacons to survive a straight sets shocker and take the match 18-25, 23-25, 27-25, 25-15, 15-11.

There was no such drama or competition in the two women’s matches. Omega XL Deacons dismissed Carlton 25-17, 25-13, 25-16. Chargers humiliated Club United 25-6, 25-6, 25-10 with Club spending more time in post match discussions than playing on the court.

Both Deacons and Chargers have won their three games played, Club have lost their three and Carlton were beaten in their two.
