Bajan brands’ breakthrough

UK Barbados Nation - - NEWS - – ASHLEY L. MCCLEAN

THE BAJAN FAVOURITES of Eclipse and Shirley biscuits are now available at Walmart stores in the Philadelphia area, which is a very good sign for the Barbados economy.

It is an important step in the right direction for the Barbados economy, as Walmart is a large retail chain, and such exports will result in additional foreign exchange coming to the island and improving the overall economic outlook.

More attention also needs to be paid to the agricultural sector, as food products grown in Barbados, such as sweet potatoes, yams, eddoes, cassava and pumpkins, are in great demand in the United States, Canada and United Kingdom, especially during the winter season.

Government needs to encourage farmers to grow such products and assist them in the marketing and export of these items. Such a venture would also bring in some much-needed revenue to Government’s coffers and help to improve its dismal financial situation.

Government also needs to embark on a public educational exercise to stress the importance of growing and consuming locally produced products in place of imported items, thereby reducing the dependence on imported products in an effort to retain more revenue in the country and reduce the import bill.

These efforts would go a long way in improving the country’s financial situation. More power to Eclipse and Shirley for leading the way.
