Girl dies af­ter ar­son at­tack

KINGSTON – A sec­ondary school stu­dent in Ja­maica died in hos­pi­tal four days af­ter ar­son­ists set fire to her fam­ily’s home.

Po­lice said Tashai Munda, a 15-year-old stu­dent of the St Hugh’s High School, died at the Kingston Pub­lic Hos­pi­tal fol­low­ing the fire that de­stroyed the three-bed­room house in St An­drew parish.

“Tashai and her mother re­ceived se­vere burns to their bod­ies and were ad­mit­ted in se­ri­ous con­di­tion. The grand­mother re­ceived mi­nor burns to her right hand and was treated and re­leased,” po­lice said.

Po­lice said that the fam­ily was awak­ened on the night of Novem­ber 25 by the fire and that while all six oc­cu­pants man­aged to es­cape through a win­dow, Tashai, her mother and grand­mother sus­tained in­juries and were taken to hos­pi­tal.

The po­lice have given no mo­tive for the in­ci­dent.

Prin­ci­pal of St Hugh’s

High, Dr Elaine Cun­ning­ham, de­scribed Tashi as an hon­our roll stu­dent.

“She’s one of our bright­est and our best. She has topped her grades from Grade 7 . . . . She is a mem­ber of our cheer­lead­ing team [and] she is loved by ev­ery sin­gle per­son,” Cun­ning­ham said, adding that teams from the Min­istry of Ed­u­ca­tion have been as­sist­ing with coun­selling ses­sions at the school.
