Girl dies after arson attack
KINGSTON – A secondary school student in Jamaica died in hospital four days after arsonists set fire to her family’s home.
Police said Tashai Munda, a 15-year-old student of the St Hugh’s High School, died at the Kingston Public Hospital following the fire that destroyed the three-bedroom house in St Andrew parish.
“Tashai and her mother received severe burns to their bodies and were admitted in serious condition. The grandmother received minor burns to her right hand and was treated and released,” police said.
Police said that the family was awakened on the night of November 25 by the fire and that while all six occupants managed to escape through a window, Tashai, her mother and grandmother sustained injuries and were taken to hospital.
The police have given no motive for the incident.
Principal of St Hugh’s
High, Dr Elaine Cunningham, described Tashi as an honour roll student.
“She’s one of our brightest and our best. She has topped her grades from Grade 7 . . . . She is a member of our cheerleading team [and] she is loved by every single person,” Cunningham said, adding that teams from the Ministry of Education have been assisting with counselling sessions at the school.
