Prayer ceremony for late UN secretary–general
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs conducted a prayer ceremony along with the lighting of thousand butter lamps at the Tashichho Dzong today, for the former Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Kofi Annan who passed away on 18th August 2018. Bhutan joins the United Nations family and the world in mourning the loss of an exemplary individual.
The prayer ceremony was led by Chief Justice Tshering Wangchuk, Chief Advisor of the Interim Government and attended by senior government officials and representatives of International Organizations based in Thimphu.
While serving as the Secretary- General of the UN from 19972006, Mr. Annan played an instrumental role in reforming the UN, promoting peace and ensuring inclusive development of all UN Member States. During his lifetime, Mr. Annan was bestowed with several awards, the most prestigious being the Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian efforts.
