Prayer cer­e­mony for late UN sec­re­tary–gen­eral

The Min­istry of For­eign Af­fairs con­ducted a prayer cer­e­mony along with the light­ing of thou­sand but­ter lamps at the Tashichho Dzong today, for the for­mer Sec­re­tary-Gen­eral of the United Na­tions, Mr. Kofi An­nan who passed away on 18th Au­gust 2018. Bhutan joins the United Na­tions fam­ily and the world in mourn­ing the loss of an ex­em­plary in­di­vid­ual.

The prayer cer­e­mony was led by Chief Jus­tice Tsh­er­ing Wangchuk, Chief Ad­vi­sor of the In­terim Govern­ment and at­tended by se­nior govern­ment of­fi­cials and rep­re­sen­ta­tives of In­ter­na­tional Or­ga­ni­za­tions based in Thimphu.

While serv­ing as the Sec­re­tary- Gen­eral of the UN from 19972006, Mr. An­nan played an in­stru­men­tal role in re­form­ing the UN, pro­mot­ing peace and en­sur­ing in­clu­sive devel­op­ment of all UN Mem­ber States. Dur­ing his life­time, Mr. An­nan was be­stowed with sev­eral awards, the most pres­ti­gious be­ing the No­bel Peace Prize for his hu­man­i­tar­ian ef­forts.
