“Gasa MP”

Bhutan Times - - Adverts -

I felt understood, because I come from a remote place most Bhutanese haven’t been to.”

With her love for a good debate and armed with questions, always, Yeshey Dem was called ‘Gasa MP’ while studying at College of Language and Culture Studies in Taktse.

So it only remained that when the time was ripe she would be making her way to the Parliament, and with reasons other than college debate.

With her command over Dzongkha, her confident demeanor and communication skills she was invited to host Druk Superstar, following which DNT offered her a job as a public relations assistant.

Her constituency is small, 996 voters to be exact, the smallness of which brings about a set of challenges. Yeshey Dem has overcome few, one of it being able to convince her parents about joining politics and choosing DNT.

The past decade has seen her community and families divide over politics. At one point her parents did not want her to join politics, not because they supported a particular party, but they feared they might not get community members to help a lending hand with farm work.

She did her research on DNT, met the office bearers and found it was compatible to her aspirations for her community.

“I felt understood, because I come from a remote place most Bhutanese haven’t been to,” she said, “The sense of community is strong, yet it is susceptible to exploitation because of lack of exposure.” Her parents too felt the same, once she explained what Nyamrup stood for.

By joining politics, Yeshey Dem is determined to pave way for girls in her community to be involved in decisionmaking and take up leadershop roles. “No women stood for elections, be it the local government or parliamentary elections, and usually there are no discussions that a woman will,” she said.

At 25, the youngest candidate, Yeshey Dem wants to change the perception that women are not capable and have baggages that make them underperform or undermine the position of a parliamentarian.
