REPORTER SENTENCED FOR DEFAMATION
A newspaper reporter based in Tsirang has been sentenced to three months in prison for libel (a published or written statement that is damaging to a person’s reputation) by the Tsirang District Court.
According to reports, the reporter had written about a woman mistreating her six-year-old stepdaughter on social media last year.
The court has ordered the reporter to pay a sum of Nu 45,000 as compensation to the woman while also publishing an apology statement to the women on the same social media to be kept for a month. The reporter can pay in lieu of prison term.
