Potatoes worth Nu 25.4mn auctioned during January-June 2018
The total volume of potatoes that was auctioned from January to June this year saw a whopping increase by almost 151 percent compared to the volume of potatoes auctioned during the same period in 2017.
According to the Statistical Release on auction of crops during January-June 2018, 1,586.29 MT of potatoes (1,461.27 MT of potatoes (Red) and 125.02 MT of potatoes (White)) were auctioned during January –June 2018.
Meanwhile, the Statistical Release is based on analysis of auction data on crops provided by Food Corporation of Bhutan Limited (FCBL). It presents the half yearly volume and value of different crops auctioned in the four auction yards of Phuentsholing, Samtse, Samdrup Jongkhar and Gelephu during the period January-June 2018.
There was no auction of potatoes during the first four months of the year (January-April) and the potato auction started only in May 2018.
In terms of monetary value, potatoes worth Nu 25.42mn (Nu 23.69mn for potato red and Nu 1.72mn for potato white) were auctioned during January-June 2018. There was reportedly an increase of 209 percent in terms of the monetary value of the potatoes auctioned in January-June 2018, up from Nu 8.21mn during the same period in 2017.
And of the total 1586.29 MT of potatoes auctioned, 785.82 MT of potatoes were auctioned at the Phuentsholing auction yard and 800.47 MT of potatoes at the Samdrup Jongkhar auction yard. There has been no auction of potatoes at Samtse and Gelephu auction yards.
And from among all the vegetables that are auctioned only at the Phuentsholing auction yard, the highest volume of vegetable auctioned was green pea (82.51 MT), followed by cabbage (70.88 MT).
The total volume of green pea auctioned during January-June 2018 was 82.51 MT, down by 32 percent compared to the same period in 2017 at 124.60 MT. However, the total volume of cabbage auctioned during January-June 2018 increased from 57.18 MT in January-June 2017, up by 24 percent.
The total value of major vegetables auctioned amounted to Nu. 5.65mn during January-June 2018, up by nine percent compared to the same period in 2017.
