NA­TIONAL EYE CEN­TER TO OPEN IN JULY NEXT YEAR

The con­struc­tion of the coun­try’s first na­tional eye cen­ter, which is un­der­way in Thim­phu, is ex­pected to open in July next year.

The Gya­lyum Ke­sang Choe­den Wangchuck Na­tional Eye Cen­ter will pro­vide bet­ter ser­vices to pa­tients suf­fer­ing from eye dis­eases once com­plete.

The eye de­part­ment at Jigme Dorji Wangchuck Na­tional Re­fer­ral Hos­pi­tal presently sees more than 100 pa­tients daily and the num­ber is even more dur­ing sum­mer. The eye cen­tre will re­port­edly pro­vide var­i­ous spe­cial­ized eye care ser­vices, be­sides also be­ing a train­ing and re­search cen­tre for health pro­fes­sion­als in the area of eye care.

The cen­tre with 18 beds in four asep­tic wards, three op­er­a­tion the­atres and an out­pa­tient unit, among oth­ers, is be­ing con­structed at a cost of US$ 1.5mn.
