FOOD IMPORT VALUE IS ALMOST THREE TIMES THAT OF EXPORT
Bhutan imported food commodities twice the value of export, according to provisional trade statistics for three quarters of this year (January-September 2018).
Bhutan reportedly experienced a food trade deficit of Nu 5.2bn in 2013 as the country imported essential food items worth Nu 6.3bn in 2013, including Nu 1.5bn worth of rice. However, a rough estimation showed that the country imported food items worth about Nu 8bn in nine months this year and exported food worth a little over Nu 3bn.
The value was derived from the value of imports under Sections I, II, III and IV of the Bhutan Trade Classification (BTS), which mainly comprises food commodities.
