Gaslit Brain

Protect Your Brain from the Lies of Bullying, Gaslighting, and Institutional Complicity

Description

Reveals the psychological functions of the manipulator’s brain and the impact of gaslighting on our minds, shining a spotlight on how manipulative brains seduce us into belief and disrupt our ability to think effectively

This psychological study analyzes the onslaught of gaslighting that has recently dominated the world stage, making many turn to the dictionary just to figure out how it works, who’s at risk, and why it’s becoming normalized. When power, credibility, and social status are harnessed to manipulate—not just individuals—but whole populaces may suffer violence against facts and truth. Our recent concern with gaslighting’s destructive force has made psychological safety a priority in relationships at home and at work.

In PART ONE, we look at the impact gaslighting has on targets’ brains and minds. Many do not realize that gaslighting has an extremely harmful neurological impact. If manipulation leads to insanity, it’s because the brain and mind have been distorted and compromised. With the advent of non-invasive technology, scientists use brain imagery to examine what happens to brains that are lied to, manipulated, and betrayed. The damage is physical and visible and provides insights into why the mind’s functions are compromised.

PART TWO lasers in on the brains of those who bully and gaslight. Many do not realize that those who lie and manipulate have deficits in their brains. If manipulation leads to insanity, it’s because the brain and mind have been distorted. With the advent of non-invasive technology, scientists use brain imagery to examine what's going on in the brains of bullies and gaslighters and why they're so effective. The damage is physical and visible, and it provides insights into why the mind’s functions are compromised, destructive, and dangerous.

PART THREE is practical and applicable. It teaches how to harness psychology and neuroscience to stay safe and sane. It provides proven exercises to keep us sharp and skeptical when faced with every manipulation from smear campaigns to spin doctors. It provides the tools needed to maintain clarity when exposed to those who are sowing the seeds of confusion and destabilization in an attempt to shatter our brains and lives. We can strengthen our brains and minds’ capacity to recognize and resist falsehoods, level by level, mechanism by mechanism, function by function. PART THREE of The Gaslit Brain turns the psychological and brain research into practical, applicable strategies that anyone can apply to identify and resist the manipulation of gaslighting.

Reviews

“After reading The Gaslit Brain, I realized my old way of thinking about manipulation—about what happens to your mind when you're under fire, whether that's in a war zone or a corporate boardroom—was missing something essential. It wasn't just about psychology. It was about the brain itself. The battlefield was inside my skull . . . For veterans, this book is survival knowledge.”

Robert Amsler, OpEx EHSS Strategist - Multi-war Combat Medic Veteran

“The Gaslit Brain is a comprehensive and deeply necessary text that weaves real-life case studies with neuroscience to reveal how gaslighting damages not just individuals, but entire institutions. Dr. Fraser shows how the brain’s adaptability can both betray and protect us, offering actionable insights for reclaiming clarity and trust. With the powerful reminder that ‘abuse often hides in plain sight because we stop noticing it,’ the book invites us to reflect critically on our roles whether as bystanders, leaders, or survivors. Gaslighting, as this book makes clear, is not just a personal issue but a systemic, cultural one.”

"An engaging read, intersecting neuroscience, personal narratives and case histories, as well as forensic and organizational psychology…  I highly recommend this unique book, which will become the current authority on gaslighting, and predict its important place in organizational psychology."

“Jen Fraser’s book The Gaslit Brain is a transformative offering for targets of gaslighting, researchers, human resource professionals, leaders, and those who aspire to be change agents in their lives and world. Through diverse and definitive case studies, Dr. Fraser utilizes the power of storytelling to exemplify the devastating impact of gaslighting on the body and soul, which can inflict life-threatening, invisible wounds and derail the careers of exemplary employees called to serve their professional and broader communities. Using the framework of cognitive science, Dr. Fraser illustrates, with accessibility and clarity, the cutting-edge research documenting how gaslighting impacts the brain’s functioning. Equally important, she flips the script on the bullies’ narratives, pushing back on their characterization as prominent and powerful, offering this reality check: bullies are weak and suffering; thus, they need to be treated, not feared. Zooming out, she paints a vivid picture of organizations that allow, by commission or omission, bullies to thrive, and the menace of institutional complicity when called out. In addition to sharing the perils of gaslighting on our personal and professional lives, she offers readers six research-backed strategies to heal the gaslit brain, empowering survivors to reclaim their story and get back to the work they are called to do.”
