Description

A twisty, high-stakes thriller in the breathless, page-turning style of Ruth Ware, Lisa Jewell, and Claire Douglas, in which nothing is as it seems and saving the day is only the beginning.

Claire Fitzroy was on the way home to London when her train from Manchester was hijacked by a group of armed men. In one terrifying moment she faced the starkest of choices: to passively stand back or act and fight back—knowing that with either choice, she could die.

With nothing to lose, the middle-aged art lecturer gathered and led a squad of passengers who, against all odds, overcame the hijackers and saved hundreds of lives. But what at first looks like heroism may play out very differently in the courts of law and public opinion. Especially when you have the blood of two men on your hands.

Opinions are heated and divided. Was she a selfless and quick-thinking hero? Or an attention-seeking vigilante and unrepentant murderer? Until now Claire has remained silent. Now, she’s finally speaking out about what happened that morning on the 10:12.

But is it the whole story?

Reviews

“A gripping thriller about the fallout from a train hijacking... Maloney’s freewheeling structure enhances the suspense, and she brings so much moral uncertainty to the proceedings that this will haunt readers long after they turn the final page. It’s a knockout.” — Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“A read that feels as breathtakingly propulsive as the runaway train itself.” — Booklist (starred review)

"Recommended for readers who are interested in international news events and social media. Fans of novels about middle-aged women who usually go unnoticed will enjoy this novel." — Library Journal

"Gripping and immersive, this salutary tale of how we stereotype and underestimate others is a white-knuckle read that also gives food for thought." — The Guardian

“Maloney has cleverly integrated multiple narratives into this speeding, off-the-rails thriller.” — Minnesota Star Tribune

"The story has an excellent twist and is a tribute to tough post-menopausal women everywhere." — The Literary Review

“Chapter after chapter of razor edge suspense.... Anna Maloney has written a genuine page turner that takes hold of the reader immediately and never once let’s go. The pacing is brutal, the characters, especially the courageous passengers, memorable. In all a decidedly new path taken for what was all too often a familiar and tired mold. Thanks for breaking it, Anna Maloney.” – Pulp Fiction Reviews

"The story unfolds across two timelines: the tense, visceral hijacking itself and the courtroom drama of the hijackers’ trial, weaving between them with skill and purpose. Maloney’s decision to structure the narrative this way pays off enormously; the back-and-forth between past and present generates a tension that a straightforward chronological telling simply couldn’t achieve. As for the title, 10:12 carries a double meaning: the time the train departed, and, fair warning, the number of hours you’ll lose sitting motionless, completely unable to put this book down." — firstClue

“This is an intricate, detailed plot that requires you to take your time as a reader to fully absorb the shifting clues. Maloney builds steady momentum by surrounding Claire with ambiguity and unspooling a far larger conspiracy operating behind the scenes. The trial is not merely about deciding one woman’s guilt; it becomes the battleground where hidden motives and secret agendas slowly come to light. Atmospheric, dense, and morally complex, the story demonstrates that surviving a nightmare is sometimes only the beginning of the ordeal. If this The 10:12 Anna Maloney review sounds like your style of mystery, it is an essential read for fans of Sarah Vaughan, Catherine Ryan Howard, and Ava Glass, then I hope you add this thriller to your list!” – Beauty Cooks Kisses

"A morally knotty thriller about public judgment and the stories we tell about who deserves to be believed." — The iPaper

"A chilling, thought-provoking and thoroughly compelling thriller. The vivid characters and tense 'what would you do?' concept make this a propulsive read." — B P Walter, author of The Treehouse and The Garden Party
