Generational coaches

-

a mid table team fires a coach Mike Sithole, George Mogopodi, Oupa Kowa, and Innocent Mmesi would be names called to rescue the situation. This is not because the coaches have proven their mettle but because they have been coaches before and have coached in the league. Although it’s a prevailing thing across the world that teams appoint managers basing on previous achievements, the tables are now turning as many young coaches are stepping up to the plate and are doing a stellar job while leading the big teams. Italian Serie A giants Juventus have trusted a novice Andrea Pirlo to lead the team as head coach; he has done really well since taking over. In England, Frank Lampard is doing a sterling work with the Chelsea side having led the side to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League and currently sitting on position 3 of the English Premiership table. Asernal have also trusted Mikel Arteta to help sail the team forward although the pilot has been slow in his take off, management is still confident that the young coach will get his grip in the next coming fixtures and turn things around at the Emirates. Another closer example will be the South African Premiership, where young coaches are also enjoying their time on the dugout and recording desirable results. Benni Maccathy has done well at Cape Town City from the past two years, also Ayanda Dlamini was appointed to lead Amazulu through choppy waters, Kitano Tembo has also cemented his position at SuperSport United.

Some other names in the PSL that have held big positions include Fadul Davids, who was roped in from Maritzburg United by Orlando Pirates where he now serves as assistant coach, Rhulani Mokoena recently returned to his post as assistant coach of Mamelodi Sundowns after a short spell as Orlando Pirates coach, Lethohonolo Seema and John Maduka among many others who have risen to the demands of coaching in the PSL. Although the local league demands that local coaches should hold at least a CAF B License to be eligible to coach in the league, many young coaches like Pontsho Moloi ( Gaborone United), Wame Mokoke( Holy Ghost), Mopholosi Reaitsanye( Gilport Lions Assistant coach) and Orabile Seabo( Taung Young Strikers) among others deserve a fair chance to showcase their tactics and abilities in the dugout, it’s time that young local coaches are brought to the test.
