GU on shopping spree

Gaborone United has seen many big trophies elude them in the past and that has worried the club’s management and supporters at large. Of recent, the club has been recruiting some of the most refined players in the country as they seek to mount a challenge in Orange FA Cup which is scheduled to conclude later this month.

The Money Machine as the club is affectionately called by its legion of supporters, haven’t been very lucky with winning tournaments. Their last cup victory dates back to 2015 when they won the Mascom Top 8, with a 2- 1 victory over bitter rivals, Township Rollers. The last time they were in the final was in 2019 and they lost 0- 2 to Jwaneng Galaxy. With almost 6 years without decorating their trophy cabinet with silverware, Club Chairman, Boitumelo Nsuge admits they are thirsty for silverware. “We want to win trophies of course, especially the Orange FA Cup, but we are focused on building a team for the future not just for the Orange FA Cup, we want to challenge for the league title.”

Moreover, the team has been on a shopping spree. Nsuge says their task was to bring in both young and experienced players to have a balanced team that can compete and challenge for a title. “We want a balanced team and we are getting at that.”

Nsunge says having a new set of players in the team and a new coach, Innocent Morapedi is a blessing for the team. “I think the effort of our players will increase, you know they always want to impress the new coach and earn a starting berth, so I think it will work well for us.”

In their fold, the team has the likes of Kekaetswe Moloi, Kennedy Amutenya, Misani Thupa, Rentse Keakabetse, Obonwe Maome, Thatayaone Kgamanyane, Lesego Galenamothale, Joel Mogorosi and Alphonso Modisaotsile. Meanwhile the new addition includes Karabo Phiri, Thato Kebue, Thatayaone Ramatlapeng, Omphile Ramoagi and Mothusi Johnson.
