Khunwane targets BoBA presidency

-

“From now on, I shall be sharing with you my ideas and plan on areas of importance.

These include but are not limited to: athletes or officials, development, women boxing, retention of former boxers, international relations and sponsorship,” Khunwane wrote in his social media platform this week.

“Do not allow anybody to confuse you and tell you false stories about me. I am already aware of their malicious campaigns against me. Please get the truth from me. In days to come, I shall share with you team mates, the VP, secretary general, treasurer, completion coordinator, public relations officer and add member.”

In an interview with BG Sport, he said he decided to contest for the BoBA presidency because he is a former boxer and is in a better position to understand what is required by athletes. It has been a while since a former boxer headed the association. The last former boxer to be president was Adrian Tayane. “Former boxers are able to address some issues in a better way and they have a track record with the Botswana National Sports Commission ( BNOC), the Botswana National Olympic Committee ( BNOC). When it comes to international relations, boxers are also in a better position with contacts in other countries.”

Quizzed on his plan on the declining state of local boxing, Khunwane said it is a mixed bag as there are good and bad things about the current state of local boxing. However, the former boxer said that during his time as an athlete, there was a lot of passion in the sport and yet they were paid as low as P10 each day in camp. He further argued that the local boxing set up does not retain former boxers who are crucial in supporting their younger athletes.

Meanwhile, Khunwane said he is better suited and qualified to be BoBA president as he has served on numerous BoBA administration as Vice President over the years. Some of the names linked to the BoBA presidency include former president, Mike Moroka who has however, denied any interest in contesting. The other noteworthy names are Irene Ntelamo, Dirang Thipe and Moremi Lefiri.
