Diamonds lead imports in February
Diamonds remain the leading import commodity in Botswana accounting for the value of 33 percent ( P2, 086.4 billion) followed by food, beverages and tobacco and fuel, ( P784.2 million) with contributions of 12.4 percent each, for food, beverages and tobacco and fuel. According to the International Trade Statistics monthly report, imports amounted to P6.3 billion reflecting a decrease of 12.3 percent in February compared to the value of P7.2 billion in January. However, diamonds were the main export commodity group in February with a contribution of 93.2 percent to total exports. Imports from SACU contributed 63.8 percent to total imports, while those from the EU and Asia accounted for 16.8 percent and 11.9 percent, respectively. Imports from South Africa accounted for 55.3 percent of total imports while those from Belgium epresented 15.3 percent. India supplied imports accounting for 4.6 percent of the monthly total.
