Obert fitness announces Kazungula Marathon

- BG reporter

Local fitness company, Obert Fitness, this week officially announced the inaugural Kazungula Bridge Marathon scheduled for Saturday 2 October 2021. The Marathon will comprise four race categories being the 42.2km marathon, the 21 km and 10km races as well as the 5 km fun run. The event date is ideal as it coincides with the country’s 55 th Independence Day long weekend.

The brainchild of Obert Fitness, Chief Executive Obert Morgan, and the Marathon will take advantage of the iconic Kazungula Bridge which was officially opened on 10th May by President Mokgweetsi Masisi, and his counterpart President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, of Zambia. A symbol of great pride for both countries, the Bridge connects Botswana and Zambia through a road and rail bridge over the Zambezi River. In addition, a one- stop- border post will service the area. The Bridge is expected to facilitate travel and trade in support of SADC’s regional integration agenda. Similarly, Morgan expects the Kazungula Bridge Marathon to directly contribute to the country’s GDP while facilitating the growth of athletics in Botswana. Speaking at the press conference held online and in person this week, one of the organisers Obert Morgan, said, “the Kasane and Kazungula region is a hybrid economic zone, because we have the benefit of a large waterway being the Chobe River as well as the Chobe Game Reserve. All these are supported by our unique wildlife experience. We will all be converging on Chobe from different parts of the world, with a strong value chain that many sectors will be able to take advantage of the Kazungula Bridge Marathon. Tour operators, hotels, guest houses, airlines, petrol companies, entertainment industries and many more will benefit.” Morgan further stated, “the Kazungula Bridge Marathon is more than an event. We are building a brand that will grow and sustain itself over the years and directly benefit the Chobe region. To us this belongs to Chobe. Our role is just to facilitate its success.”
