Govt embarks on water reclamation
Water Utilities Corporation ( WUC) aims to improve treatment of sewage water for consumption next year to address the shortage of water supply in the country.
This follows the refurbishment of the Glen Valley plant that is expected to be completed in June this year while commissioning is expected in September after completion of the pipe installations.
Minister of Land Management, Water and Sanitation Services, Kefentse Mzwinila told the media during a tour that after completion of the refurbishment of the waste water treatment facility at Glenn Valley, the ministry is planning to embark on waste water reclamation.
“When we finish this project we will start consultations on how we can embark on this project. We are still going to discuss as the country’s leadership
and we will consult Batswana to come up with a workable project. This is going to need a lot of consultation”.
Government has an option to source treated sea water from Namibia or river water from Lesotho. Mzwinila said the ministry decided to refurbish the plant and increase its capacity from 50 millilitres per day to 90 millilitres per day.
The project was done in three phases the first being the refurbishment of the plant, increase the capacity of the pipes and waste water reclamation.
“We want to treat waste water and reuse it for consumption. Currently we don’t have the technology to do that but we will benchmark on other countries including Namibia and Lesotho which are already using the technology”.
The P350 million projects which started in 2019 are conducted through a joint venture between WUC and Beijing Enterprises and four citizen sub- contractors.
