Is UDC a political Modaefok?

- Thabo Masokola

Stripakgosi! Iaelammago! Skipasentekane! Tipi- ya- mokwatla! Chencha- marobalo! You can name all these home- brewed liquor, but none comes close to Modaefok. In terms of recipe and intoxication, Modaefok is in a class of its own. In football terms, Modaefok is in premier league. The few who have tried it and lived to tell the story, describe the encounter as a journey to ‘ hell and back.’ However, not many have been too lucky to survive the ‘ eat or be eaten’ encounter with Modaefok.

They say, it is not called Modaefok for nothing; you dae, you dae! Those in the know say, the secret to Modaefok is in its recipe or let us say, lack thereof. Apparently, anything and everything makes Modaefok.

The only main ingredient, is water. Whatever follows thereafter, is what makes Modaefok to be Modaefok. Actually, I hear even the water does not necessarily have to be clean.

In fact, they say, the dirtier the water, the better Modaefok. The last recipe I heard of, there was somewhere where car battery had to come in.

Pardon me, I am not sure exactly if the guy said, the battery comes in after adding a mixture of washing powder with methylated spirit or after adding a mixture of activated charcoal with baking powder. But for the purpose of this write- up, let us just say; do not try this at home.

In my sober opinion, there is very little doubt that the Umbrella for Democratic Change ( UDC) is broken. And this is not surprising.

Actually, it is a logical conclusion for anything that is driven by wisdom of the mob; where a thousand fools make a genius. Instead of taking time to define its direction and purpose post- 2019 elections, the know- it- all UDC leadership put on risky political stunts of trying to bring every ‘ opposition’ organisation into its fold, including even ‘ social clubs’ like Botswana Patriotic Front ( BPF). What is apparent here is that, the UDC was interesting in the ‘ look big’ thing, rather than political realities obtaining on the ground. They were interested in making a political Modaefok, ignoring the obvious risks that come with it.

Besides, the move was just a circus show put to flatter the easy to deceive. In reality, following the resurgence of Botswana Congress Party ( BCP) in the 2019 elections, the political gap between UDC’s two ‘ big’ parties, BCP and Botswana National Front ( BNF) was irreconcilably widening.

The resounding election victory of BCP was always going to be a bitter pill to swallow for UDC president, Duma Boko and his notorious fearfokol fanatics. Therefore, any attempts to bring other ‘ parties’ to seek refuge into a dilapidating UDC house, was a perfect recipe for Modaefok. It is not surprising that nobody in the current UDC leadership seems sober enough to ‘ cease fire.’ In street lingo; it is now, fok- fok.

But the million- Pula question we all should be asking is, how long is the UDC going to exist as a façade? Pardon me if I happen to offend you comrades, but politically speaking, is it not just natural and politically- expedient for the BCP to be calling for a reflective moment in the UDC?

I mean, this is a bugle call for enjoyment of the ‘ spoils of war.’ As far as I am concerned, Boko has to live with the ‘ sad’ fact that Dumelang Saleshando and his BCP have emerged victorious and are perhaps making the right ‘ noise.’

I am hearing it for the first time that, it is ‘ malicious’ to call for a democratic process, like an elective congress. I wonder what kind of ‘ democracy’ does the UDC want us to imagine, I mean, in the event that a miracle happens and they win state power. As much as we hope the two ‘ big’ men leading the pack to sooth their gigantic egos and come to their sobriety, we are better off, hopeless. That is because UDC presidency is perhaps the only political lifeline that Boko is hanging on.

Besides, that, Boko would be cast into political obscurity, a space Saleshando knows too well. Having said all these, is it too conspiratorial to think that Saleshando and the BCP are sensing an opportunity to finish off Boko and fearfokol cabal once- and- for all? May be, I am on Modaefok.
