Mothibi appointed to top IWG position
The IWG Global Executive has recently appointed local sports administrator Game Mothibi as the new representative for Africa and Europe. She joins the IWG New Zealand Secretariat after working at Women’s Sport Africa Network ( WSAN).
Mothibi was formerly the SecretaryGeneral of the IWG Secretariat and Conference 2014 – 2018 in Botswana. She started her advocacy for women in sport and sport development as a volunteer, working at the Botswana National Sport Council for several years before eventually becoming a board member of the National Olympic Committee.
Now she will represent women in sport in Africa on the IWG board and in the global women and sport movement. All issues affecting women and sport in Africa will be her responsibility at IWG for the next 4 years, as IWG will be moving from New Zealand to the new host of the next quadrennial 2022- 2026. “My appointment came early, I have to finish the term ending in 2022 of which the position was held by the late Matilda Mwaba. So I’ll finish off this term. Taking Africa to the 8th IWG world Conference and then start my term with new IWG host, who will soon be announced,” she said in an interview this week.
Moreover, she steps on a bigger stage to continue addressing issues of
women in sport. “Even before my appointment, I have been working hard to address issues of women and sport in Botswana through engagement with WASBO, through our consultancy called Sport Management Agency and through writing columns for Spotkick Magazine.”
She admitted that her new position will help widen her networks which will definitely benefit Botswana and will help her learn more. “I will share my lessons with women in port at both my country and in Africa,” she said.
Quizzed about her key mandate in her new position, she said her role will include helping to promote women and sport in Africa, working with African women and sport organizations and working with universities to encourage research on women and sport in Africa, among others
“I will also work within Women Sport Africa Network to achieve all these, because the network was also instrumental in my appointment. I am already serving as their Secretary General; I will also be positioning Africa women and sport at the global level and help address gender inequalities and racism that affect women who take part in sport.” Mothibi will move from her current position of Co- Opted Member, to the position of Africa Representative for the next four years. Her new role will see her represent the pan- Africa voice, and she brings extensive global experience in women and sport and gender equality.
