Taste Mexico with Ricos Tacos

A new addition to street menu

- PHEMELO RAMASU BG REPORTER

Just after the FNBB park in Broadhurst, descending down the Taung flyover and facing West to join the Western bypass, is Ricos Tacos, a different kind of street food, tucked away from the buzzing Airport Junction Mall nearby. The street food joint is a remarkable eatery, introducing a unique taste of Mexico.

The business, which has been in operation for a month and a half now, is the concept of Bathusi Ditlhako and Eric Pfund, who happen to be neighbours in Block 8. The two share a passion for entrepreneurship and giving Batswana the opportunity to earn a living. Speaking during an interview with this publication, Ditlhako explains that they opted for this location as it is right on the main road, and likely to tap into the traffic. He also says that the outdoor gym next to the business allows customers some play time while waiting for their food orders. One thing that is beautiful about the two partners is that they are very humble. While making profit would be a welcome development, their objective is to give an opportunity to others who have a passion for the food industry. Both Ditlhako and Pfund have a background in the food industry. Pfund, who is from America, has worked in the industry for years. “We wanted to tap into this three- way intersection,” he explains. Shedding light on why they opted for Tacos that are stuffed with either chicken or mince, Pfund explains that they wanted to introduce this Mexican treat to the streets of Gaborone, which has not been introduced very well. He also says that they wanted to offer locals with variety when it comes to street food, and move away from the popular fat cakes and fresh chips. “We are offering a well- balanced meal at once. Remember they say that you are what you eat,” he explains. He further says that the Tacos are so easy to eat, and that customers can walk and eat at the same time without any issues. Since opening, the reception has been incredible, he says. He also notes that the business has really taken off to a great start, and that they are packed in the late afternoons with some customers grabbing a bite for dinner. One thing they have learnt from this experience is the fact that one does not need a lot to start something. Pfund shares that they have a staff compliment of 12, and that they are working on securing another location in the city centre to be operated by Ditlhako. “On our first day, by Midday, we were sold out and we realised there was potential,” says Pfund. Staff wise, he says

that they wanted staff that was ready and eager to engage with customers. Pfund is an artist by profession but as a foreigner, it was hard for him to find employment hence he decided to start his own business. Sharing a bit about their expansion plans, he notes that besides plans for another location in the city centre, they already have one or two people who are eager to take the business to areas that include Maun and Kasane. They are also looking into adding more dishes to their menu. As they expand, they want to adapt their opening hours, and will open early in order to tap into the breakfast rush.
