BNF suspends Segokgo
Former Chairman for South- East District Council and Sefoke Ward councillor in Tlokweng Constituency, Phenyo Segokgo has been slapped with a six ( 6) months suspension from the Botswana National Front ( BNF).
Segokgo who has been suspended by the party’s Tlokweng Branch for indiscipline joined the BNF in 2018 after defecting from Botswana Movement for Democracy ( BMD).
He dumped the BMD when the party was expelled from Umbrella for Democratic Change ( UDC) - a coalition in which BNF is a contracting partner.
A letter written to Segokgo by Tlokweng Constituency Secretary Gloria Nkwe, says the former councillor is suspended for failing to appear before a disciplinary committee.
Nkwe stated that Segokgo is found guilty of creating a division in such a way as to provoke serious divisions or a breakdown of unity within the organisation.
“You are found guilty for behaving in such a way as to provoke serious divisions or a breakdown of unity within the party.
“Undermining the respect for or impeding the functioning structures of the organisation and abusive and insulting language to another member or member of the public,” stated Nkwe in the suspension letter.
She said the suspension is with immediate effect during which Segokgo is removed from all party platforms and will not be allowed to attend any party events and activities.
Segokgo could not be reached for comment at press time as his mobile phone rang unanswered. His suspension comes a week after the BNF launched its National Membership recruitment Drive in Tlokweng which falls under the South Central Constituency.
Segokgo who lost his council seat during the 2019 general election was expected to try his luck again in 2024 this time according to sources, for a Parliamentary seat. Segokgo was first linked to the BNF in August 2016 while still BMD Youth League President where he was tipped to challenge the former Tlokweng MP, Same Bathobakae.
He was then said to have been lured to the BNF by constituency councillors. At the time the councillors were said to have tapped on Segokgo’s unhappiness with the proposed special congress by the BMD.
He would later be lured to the party after the passing of Bathobakae to contest the by- elections but somersaulted after the party in the constituency opted for its then Branch Chairman, Kenneth Segokgo who went on to win the constituency back for the UDC in 2017.
