KENNEDY THAL SINGS GREENS

In a garden, less than 100 square metres in size, the creative cultivates almost every green stuff that comes to his mind

Singer, songwriter, and recording artist, Kennedy Thal’s urban garden is envied by many. An explosion of colour, and an array of variety plants, herbs, root vegetables and trees, his garden is brilliantl­y coordinate­d. It is kind of beautiful when one hears the story of how this garden came to fruition. It is even more beautiful and inspiring to hear and learn from Thal that when it came to nit picking what to grow in his garden, he was deliberate and mindful about what he wanted to see sprouting. Every sprouting plant in the garden has a purpose. To paint a picture about what one can find in the garden, he has a big collection of herbs. In total, he has close to 15 varieties of herbs and these includes Turmeric, Sage, Pink Sage, Rosemary, Dark Blue Rosemary, Pink Rosemary, Italian basil, Opal basil, Bush basil, Oregano, Cuban Oregano, Peppermint, Apple Mint, Lemon Balm, Coriander, Parsley, Moss Parsley, Thyme, Lemon Thyme, Watercress, Blood Sorrel, Chives, Garlic Chives, Tea Tree, Chamomile, Wild Rocket, Sweet Rocket, Lavender, French Lavender and Dill.

His labour of love also contains 7 varieties of Peppers which include Cayenne, Bell Pepper, Habanero, Tabasco, Jalapeño, Trinidadia­n Black Scorpion and Serrano. On the sweet side, he has three berries which include Blueberry, raspberry, and strawberry. Furthermor­e, he has another massive collection of root vegetables inclusive of White Italian Garlic, Purple Garlic, Texan Grano Onion, Australian Brown Onion, Spring Onion, Red Onion, Leek, Cherry Belle Radish, Easter Egg Radish and Hybrid Carrot. Get this, he also happens to have another extensive collection of leafy greens which include Chinese Cabbage, Bok Choi, Southern Blue Kale, Tosca Kale, Liquorice Kale, Swiss Chard, Red Swiss Chard, Mustard Spinach, Mustard Red Spinach, Commander Lettuce, Red Lettuce, Thurinus Lettuce, Red Cabbage and Savoy Cabbage. You can also find tomatoes in varieties that range from Heinz, Money Maker, Hybrid and even Bite Sized. Other produce in his garden includes vines such as Cucumber, and produce such as artichokes and asparagus. On top of this he is growing 40 fruit and nut trees and 9 grape vines of varying varieties.

The size of the garden is 9 by 11 meters which is 99 square meters. He tells this publicatio­n that the net structure is held up by 9 gum poles and that he has built basket hangers into it to add an element of vertical gardening and further maximise use of the space. The gum poles, he says also double as vertical trellises.
