Former Zebras captain Joel Mogorosi was voted as the Male Players’ Representative at the Footballers Union of Botswana Elections held in Gaborone this past weekend.

Mogorosi, whose football career spans to nearly 20 years, has been ushered into the position during the elective congress and looks set to take up his new role diligently. Speaking in an interview, Mogorosi said he is ready to represent fellow players since he is the most closest to them: “Ninety five percent of the players here are my friends, they look up to me and I think taking up their issues with me would be a lot easier. I think it’s a lot difficult for players to express themselves to people and trust them; the relationship I have with them would change the perspective because they are my brothers and they are open to me, so I would be able to take up their issues to the union and help them out.”

When quizzed if he would take up his new role full time, Mogorosi indicated that he still has plenty to offer on the pitch and recently renewed his contract with Gaborone United.

“I am still contracted to Gaborone United, of course I am soon going to hang my boots but not like this; I still have some years to play and I can’t retire in the midst of the COVID- 19 crisis, it has to be different.”

Moreover, Mogorosi couldn’t tell if he would go into football or sport administration when he finally hangs his boots, “you never know these things; I can’t be sure as well but when my days of playing are over, all I know is that I won’t be lost to Football as I will always be involved in the sport whichever way possible. There are lots of things to do in football,” he said.

Mogorosi has had a well decorated football career, having been the National team captain for many years. His fighting spirit on the pitch always made him standout as a leader. He also played in South Africa for Bloemfontein Celtic and he helped the club to win the major Telekom knockout trophy. Locally, Mogorosi has dominated the scenes, winning league titles with Mochudi Center Chiefs and Township Rollers. He has also won the FA Cup and the Mascom Top 8 and put an icing on the cake with several top goal scorer and player of the tournament awards. He was part of the squad that qualified for the 2012 Afcon, but missed the tournament due to an injury.
