FUB becomes more inclusive
Adopted new diverse adjustments
Following their elective congress this past weekend, the Footballers Union of Botswana ( FUB) has made adjustments and tweaks that are set to see the union grow in leaps and bounds.
Speaking in an interview this week, FUB Secretary General Kgosana Masaseng said the consideration for these constitutional amendments were mainly influenced by the desire to evolve with the times and to democratise the internal processes.
“The idea was to push more powers into the hands of the members as well as a diversity and inclusion plan aimed at elevating the voice of female players. So, it was only logical that we increase the number of women in the board from one to three,” he said.
As part of democratising the board, elections were for all positions unlike in the past where the elected officials would nominate people into the board as representatives of standing committees. “The new structure is membership driven as each board member has a specific role with key deliverables. This is a better operational model compared to working with committees, which are a bloated structure by nature.” The Footballers Union of Botswana elections, coordinated and concluded by the Electoral committee, ended with Onalethata Tshekiso emerging victorious with 45 votes to Sekhana Koko’s 3 votes for the president position. Several resolutions from the congress showed that players want to return to play but the environment must be safe for them to return. The board is tasked with the responsibility to ensure that all statutes and or rules under review are done in line with the interests of the players.
FUB is to address the issue of players’ contracts as different clubs are using varying interpretations which in some instances don’t favour players. FUB would work on the strategy to engage players regularly on welfare matters.
The union is also expected to broaden scope on player development initiatives in order to accommodate different levels of players’ education and to also engage BURS and clubs to ensure compliance by both the players and their employers as well as to open up some engagements where possible.
