BAA still chasing autonomy
The association is in talks with BNSC for self regulation
Botswana athletics association ( BAA) have started talks with Botswana National Sports Commission ( BNSC), to hand the athletics governing body its autonomy. BNSC currently micro- manages BAA, a move that is seen to be holding back the athletics body from realizing its true potential.
Talks to give BAA its autonomy are still at its infant stage according to the association’s Vice President, OabonaTheetso.
“Early engagements over the matter have started, at the moment we are managed by BNSC; we are not able to manage our activities and we believe that if we were autonomous things could be much better,” Theetso said. According to the BAA, vice president, they have to seek permission to host events as they rely on the local sporting mother- body and government for financial backing. The financial challenges that have hit the country after the outbreak of coronavirus, the government has reduced its budget to sport, thus meaning sporting codes operating under micro- management of BNSC are operating within a thin budget and ultimately less activities.
