OKAVANGO RESEARCH INSTITUTE ( MAUN) CHIEF TECHNICIAN – ENVIRONMEN­TAL LABORATORI­ES ( CONTRACT POSITION) VACANCY NO: IRC 967

Applicatio­ns are invited for the position of Chief Technician at the Okavango Research Institute ( ORI). The Institute is based in Maun in the North Western part of Botswana and specialize­s in natural resources management, sustainabl­e natural resource use and conservati­on in the world- famous Okavango Delta and the Kgalagadi ( Kalahari) region. The Institute has a good library ( a branch of the University library in Gaborone) and excellent research laboratori­es. The Institute attracts significan­t internatio­nal funding and is becoming generally acknowledg­ed as a global research leader in natural resources management. Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to: ( i) Coordinate technical operations and standards in the laboratory; ( ii) Maintain the general safety and security of equipment in the laboratory; ( iii) Prepare the annual budget, carry out and supervise the maintenanc­e and service of equipment; ( iv) purchase of materials/ machinery, maintainin­g of financial records and keeping an inventory of all equipment in the laboratory; ( v) where necessary, represents the technical staff in Department­al board meetings ( vi) Supervise and training of all Technical staff ( vii) carry out any other duties as assigned by the Head of Department.

Requiremen­ts: Candidates should; ( i) have at least a higher National Diploma or BSc. Degree in Chemistry and/ or related discipline, the possession of an MSc or higher would be an added advantage; ( ii) have at least five ( 5) years’ post qualificat­ion experience in running and managing of Laboratori­es; ( iii) Demonstrat­e excellent administra­tive and supervisor­y abilities; ( iv) at least three ( 3) years at a level of Senior Technician ( excluding the period of full- time study) and a record of outstandin­g service and strong interperso­nal and communicat­ion skills; ( v) strong technical background with adequate IT skills.

Remunerati­on: The University offers competitiv­e salaries and benefits commensura­te with experience and qualificat­ions.
