BFL explains Sebego’s appointment
Botswana Football League ( BFL) on the 16th of October announced the appointment of two independent directors, Notwane President Tebogo Sebego and Johane Mchive.
The duo’s appointment was in line with the BFL’s constitution which requires that the company must have seven ( 7) executive directors, with two ( 2) of them being independent, four ( 4) coming from the BFL, one ( 1) from First Division and in addition, two ( 2) non- executive members, ( BFL CEO and BFA representative).
According to information emanating from the newly formed entity, the appointment of the aforementioned individuals is to give the BFL board depth in terms of skill set that may be lacking within the board.
They are also expected to provide independent decisions without being materially biased towards issues being discussed.
With Tebogo Sebego currently serving as the President of Notwane Football Club, and Mothusi Lekalake, who is the chairman of Notwane FC, serving in the BFL board as one of the shareholders, there were questions raised on whether Sebego can be classified as an independent board member.
The BFL Chairman Nicolas Zakhem dismissed the apprehension and justified Sebego’s appointment adding that it was a call made by the 16 shareholders of the company, emphasizing that his expertise were badly needed.
“According to the BFL constitution, the appointment of these two individuals had to be made. As a company, BFL can sue and can be sued, we needed a lawyer and we couldn’t afford one. We also needed a legal mind in the board, Sebego was voted in during a secret ballot vote in which all 16 shareholders were part of,” Zakhem stated.
The arrival of Sebego has already played a key role, with the BFL concluding some of the deals that were pending due to the absence of legal input earlier this week. Zakhem stressed that the legal advice arm is imperative as it can help avoid unnecessary court cases by eliminating mistakes or resolving matters at an early stage. Sebego is not new to football, in fact, he has been a legal advisor for Botswana Football Association and also played a pivotal role in drafting the constitution of the association before he became the President of the same association in 2012.
In other BFL matters, vaccination of players is currently ongoing at Lekidi Football Centre and clubs such as Notwane, Gilport Lions, Township Rollers and Gaborone United have
