Close race for the golden boot

- BG Correspondent

The race for the top goal scorer accolade is on once more as the 2021- 22 campaign heats up and there are a few more contenders in the mix for the top scorer honours, this time around there is a paradigm shift as per the usual dynamics in the race that usually involves one or two players.

Thatayaone Kgamanyane is leading the pack with 11 goals after 15 rounds of fixtures, the Gaborone United attacker is showing some growth and his convention rate has been on a rising graph in the games that he has played. Although Kgamanyane’s goal scoring prowess has been there for everyone to see, the player has been hampered by injuries lately, his goal return has suffered significantly. But hope is still that the marksman can fire Gaborone United to their first league title in over 10 years. Jwaneng Galaxy’s Thaba Sesinyi has been bagging the goals lately, the attacker has scored 10 goals so far, after making a return to the local league from South Africa several months ago. The skillful and speedy winger boasts an amazing record in his career of scoring goals consistently and creating chances for his team mates. Sesinyi doesn’t look like someone who is done scoring goals; he is definitely going to bring his scoring boots to every game and challenge Kgamanyane as the league top goal scorer. So far, the two players are the only ones to have reached double figures in the league. Kabelo Babusi of Extension Gunners and Pako Gaofose of Police XI have been the most surprising strikers to make this list, the two are tied with 8 goals each and they are joined by the nomadic Gaborone United attacker, Therosetsile who has also managed to score 8 goals.

The player has thrived since joining from Orapa United getting his share of goals for Moyagoleele. Meanwhile, Sua Flamingoes have been boosted by Tendai Nyumasi, who is approaching his mid 30s and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. The Flamingoes captain has scored 7 goals and alongside him is Orapa United marksman, Mbatshi Elias who has laid down a mark of intent at the beginning of the 2021- 22 campaign. Another entry for Sua Flamingoes is Mcebisi Moyo and Wandal Rudath of Jwaneng Galaxy, the two foreign players have showcased their quality and both will be keen to etch their names into history as they intend to lead the charts. An unlikely candidate for the top scorer, Odirile Lekoba has scored 6 this season and the Extension Gunners striker hit the ground running in 2021- 22. Mapantsola faithful will be hopeful he can continue that habit until the end of the season.

It’s the first time in recent history that attackers in the local league have enjoyed their best ever season from a goals perspective; many of them could be a good bet to challenge for the Golden Boot as they aim to pick up the slack from the previous seasons.
