Baking on Sweet tooth

Moyo banking on her sweet tooth into a baking industry

Some people prefer savoury food, while others cannot hold their sweet tooth tendencies, and for one Kesegofetse Moyo, her love for sweet stuff has turned her into a cake baker of note.

She never had intentions to join the bakery and confectionary world, but today, she stands a place in competing with other cake makers around. Those who always drool over the caramel cake of one upmarket store, can attest that her sponge cake carries almost the same taste with that fluffy, soft fresh taste. She mostly does birthday themed cakes, but recently started making wedding and bridal shower cakes. Her journey into confectionary started in 2019 and she tells this publication that within two years’ time she had already mastered her baking skills. “Baking is more like a hobby to me now. It is something that I do during my spare time and it helps me to unwind to a point that I wish to open my own bakery and confectionery shop one day,” she says.

The Tlokweng based sweet baker emphasizes that although she is particular about healthy eating, her sweet tooth has always ached for a variety of sweet treats, and she is glad that she has birthed a business from this. “Because of my sweet tooth, I would literally drool when passing through a confectionery section in stores; I then started to try out some recipes at home and gradually fell in love with the art of baking,” she tells BG Style. Besides cakes, she has now added cupcakes and cake pops to her supply, and also looks forward to trying out cookies and biscuits. She says that she is humbled by the feedback that she receives and it has definitely made her to grow into a perfectionist in the field.

“The feedback has been amazing and humbling, especially that when I started I was just about passing time with no intention to make anything big, but a lot of people appreciated my work,” she says, noting that selfbelief is important.

She sees Botswana bakery and confectionery services doing well, and is confident that soon they will fill the open gaps and give Batswana a much greater taste.

“The market is growing every day as new entrants enter with fresh ideas and new products. I am wowed on a daily basis, seeing the exceptional work by fellow Batswana bakers on Facebook. I am generally impressed by the growth and talent I am seeing in the Botswana bakery and confectionery market,” says Moyo.
