FOOTBALL

The battle to avoid relegation from the Botswana Football League ( BFL) came down to Gilport Lions beating Notwane FC 2- 1 this past Wednesday as both teams scrapped for their top- flight status.

It has been a bad season for both teams and they both intend to boost their survival chances with significant wins over the course of the remaining few fixtures.

This week, the relegation battle will reached climax as Sechaba and the Cub battling it out in a key game of survival at Otse Police College. The crucial win for Gilport Lions, a win means they now have 16 points in the bag and only 3 shy from Notwane who remain at 19 points, with just three games until the season curtain closes.

Already the cubs have had a season to forget, having only won three games this season and registering 17 defeats. The side came with a clear intentions to win against a side that they can match pound for pound. The crucial win will now put more pressure on their opponents and will help Paradzayi Madivenga’s side keep their hopes of remaining in the league alive.

The Gilport gaffer might be the a worried man, but there is no doubt that the coach has the survival know how as he has on several occasions rescued the team from the drop. Concentration has failed them once more when Morupule Wanderers came from behind to beat them 2- 1 in a highly contested BFL game a few days ago.

On the other hand, Toronto are also trying to dig themselves out of the relegation hole; their efforts going forward could go a long way in also pleasing their large fan base who have run out of patience recently.

Thaloba Nthaga’s troops have their sight set on nothing but survival and their focus is solely on that hence it is expected that the focus will be transformed to action in the pitch and their action going forward will be sparked with determination and the zeal to survive. Recently coming from a devastating 0- 3 defeat against Masitaoka before losing to Gilport, Notwane will put their hopes on some of their seasoned and experienced players like Galabgwe Moyana, Kaelo Kgaswane, Emmanuel Nlu and Bophelo Kealeboga to save their league status.

Other teams entangled in the relegation include Mogoditshane Fighters. Fighters are not anyhow safe from relegation. Another relegation candidate is MR Highlanders.
