BOBS SUPERVISION FOR FARMERS

-

In an effort to achieve self- sufficiency in food production, the government has imposed an importation ban on some fresh produce like tomatoes, onions and ginger. However, there is something that the government neglected to do and some farmers are taking full advantage of that. The government assumed that farmers would harvest their produce and take it to market when it was potready. Conversely, some farmers use a different measure to determine market- readiness of their produce: placement of orders. The result has been that the market is now flooded with under- developed produce: green tomatoes as well as beetroots and onions the size of the smallest Zambuk tin. If you realised, the government has never issued any instructions to farmers with regard to what sort of produce they should take to market. The latter means that legally, the farmers are not doing anything wrong. Clearly, there is need to protect consumers and it would be ideal if the Botswana Bureau of Standards ( BoBS) set standards for what sort of farm produce should be taken to market, detailing what stage of growth and colour such produce should be.

JOB SECURITY OF DCEC BOSS

There is a perception that the position of head of the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime has the least job security in the world. Not so: that honour goes to the position of British Prime Minister.
