Security Systems head coach, Kaelo Wire Kaelo has been roped in as the new Under 23 head coach, for the upcoming Olympic qualifying clash against Eswatini.

Kaelo has previously been tipped to become the next Botswana Football Association ( BFA) Technical Director, which underlines his credentials to lead at national level.

Contacted for a comment, Kaelo told BG Sport that he relishes the challenge to lead the U23 side adding that it is an honour to serve the country.

“It is a big opportunity for me more so that it is coming for the very first time, I have never been part of any national set up at any level be it as a player or as a coach,” he said.

“The good thing is that it comes at a time when I believe that I have accumulated some wealth of experience, however learning never stops. I take this as a big opportunity and a big challenge as I hold the expectations of the whole country, and I’m looking to work and exceed any expectations,” Kaelo shared.

The Alarm Boys gaffer has served in the BFA structures as a coach instructor for grassroots and preliminary coaching courses.

He currently holds a CAF B license and is awaiting his graduation to acquire his CAF A coaching certificate.

He highlighted that he is looking forward to working with young players and help the U23’ s qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

“I am a teacher by profession, my appreciation and my love to work with young people originates from my time back as a teacher. The urgency to nurture young

talent has never been relegated by the challenge to win, young players only want to play and learn. It is a very exciting moment to lead the group and see them excel and grow their talents,” he said.

Pontsho Moloi was reportedly on the verge of becoming the U23 coach but the association has since opted to rope in Wire.

The technical director of BFA, Tshepho Mphukuthi said the recent success accrued by Kaelo proved him to be a worthy candidate to lead the national U23 side.

“For starters, in the previous season we have seen him do very well. Reaching the final of the Orange FA cup and Mascom Charity cup shows that he has the right credentials to lead a team and we felt that he deserves to be given a chance,” Mphukuthi responded.

Mogomotsi Mpote has been the one who was entrusted to lead the U23’ s but he has now been assigned to take charge of the senior team hence Kaelo was appointed to fill in the post.

“Mogomotsi Mpote is with the Zebras and the AFCON qualifiers are not yet over and we decided to bring in a new face.

Kaelo will be in charge until the end of the Olympic qualifiers, should he qualify, he will still be the one to lead us. The U23’ s are only active once in every four ( 4) years,” BFA Technical Director responded.

The BFA also announced the appointment of Patrick Kowa as the U20 coach, who will be in charge of the team for the COSAFA games. Camps for both teams began on Wednesday.

Should Botswana overcome Eswatini, they will take on the reigning AFCON U23 champions, Egypt, who previously qualified for the 2020 Olympics.
