Botswana Olympian boxer Rajab Mohammed is expected to fully recover after sustaining a head injury at the ongoing AFBC Africa Boxing Championships.

The pugilist sustained an injury during round 3 of his bout against Algeria’s Moziane Mohammed- Elamin in the 51KG category. The two boxers had a head clash and the local boxer got a cut on his forehead.

“He sustained a Repetitive Strain Injury; he is being monitored by our team Doctors and I am told he is doing very well at the moment,” Botswana Boxing

Association BoBA mouthpiece, Moitshepi Nkabiti said in a recent interview.

The bout ended with Rajab losing the fight and eliminated from the African showpiece.

Meanwhile, Nkabiti said Team Botswana performance at the continental showpiece has been good and already they have six athletes in the medal bracket, “we took nine boxers to the competition and so far so good, we have six who are already in the medal bracket and that’s truly impressive.

He further added that there are a lot of positives to take from this tournament as they have been struggling to bring desirable results.“From 2020, we have been under performing and we haven’t set any targets for ourselves even at Zone 4, we never set targets but we have been progressing slowly and we are getting there.

“We never wanted to put ourselves under pressure but we got a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games which is commendable.” From here Nkabiti says the focus will now be the 2023 Paris Olympics. “We are preparing for the Olympics and our boxers are reaching their peak, so we are beefing up our squad.

We want to work on their fitness and exposure ahead of the Olympics and maybe then we will set targets.” Lethabo Modukanele won 5- 0 against Dila Vuyolwethu in the 48kg and she

will compete in the semifinals this Friday. Bele Phekie made a walkover and proceeded to the next stage as her opponent failed the weight in the 54kg. Keamogetse Kenosi also procedeed to

the semis.

George Molwantwa dominated Seychelles’ Moustache Romano Roberto Angelo in the 54Kg category to win by RSC ( Referee Stopped Contest).
