Plastic Surgeons converge in international congress

Over 70 countries represented

- BG REPORTER

Dr. Uamunovandu Tjinyeka has come back highly recharged from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery ( ISAPS) World Congress that was held in Istanbul, Turkey.

Tjinyeka is a Motswana Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, and was among delegates from over 70 countries who attended the September 20th- 24th congress. ISAPS is one of the world’s leading professional bodies for certified Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. The Congress is held every two years, with the next one coming in 2024 possibly to be held in Columbia. Dr. Tjinyeka is also a Lecturer at the Department of Surgery at the University of Botswana, a Doctor at Marina, and has a private practice at Gaborone Private Hospital.

For four days, delegates had a chance to experience and witness more than 10 live surgeries performed by some of the most sought- after Surgeons in the world, including Short Scar Neck lift, and Surgical Net, brow lift, mid face lifting, immersion workshop and master classes, sculpture courses, Women Surgeons Symposium, as well as learn the latest research from the industry.

In an interview with Botswana Guardian, Tjinyeka said the congress brought together big guys who lead in their respective fields of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, performing various plastic and Aesthetic surgeries such as breast augmentation, tummy tucks, and facelifts to mention a few. He explained that his colleagues use various options available in their field such as implants. He said that during the sessions, they had a chance to learn and see cases of how to troubleshoot cases, as patients differ. “They had interesting cases, some of which are not so common,” he explained. Tjinyeka highlighted that it was quite an experience to learn from the giants in his industry, and absorb as much knowledge.

“The lessons were many. I learnt how far you can go in terms of cosmetics, and how far you can push boundaries within the parameters set,” he noted, adding that as a professional, it was vital for him to measure his abilities. He also shared that it was reassuring to see that he is not doing anything different from his peers. However, one of the differences between him and them is that, they have high volumes of patients, and that their procedures extend to Brazilian butt lift, where fat is transferred into the buttocks to create more fullness. “But the principles are the same,” he noted. Tjinyeka pointed out that it was crucial to attend these congresses, which afforded him the opportunity to interact with his peers on a larger scale, especially when one comes from a country like Botswana where Plastic and Reconstructive

Surgery is still developing. “I don’t see myself as a Plastic Surgeon of Botswana only, but need to interact with other peers,” Tjinyeka said. They had a lot of body contouring sessions for both male and females. Body contouring or body sculpting refers to surgical procedures that improve the appearance of skin and tissue after major weight loss.

This can include tummy tucks, where excess skin and fat is removed from abdomen, liposuction - a procedure that removes fat from a specific area such as the hips, buttocks and abdomen, and lower body lift to mention a few.

One of the interesting cases that he witnessed was Abdominal Wall Contouring, for males who wish to have a six pack or want to look masculine. With the latest developments, he said that fat can be injected into the muscles. The fat cells, he noted, will help the muscles grow fuller.

“Fat rejuvenates the skin,” he noted.
