PPC Botswana fights carbon emissions

- Andrew Maramwidze

PPC Botswana has announced intentions to reverse its position as one of the companies immensely contributing to carbon footprint.

The development comes six months after parliament adopted a Climate Change Policy in accordance with COP26 requirements to reduce carbon emissions.

Speaking at the PPC Master Class 2022, PPC Botswana Head of Business Unit, Tuelo Botlhole bemoaned that the cement industry is one of the biggest contributors to carbon emissions.

“Despite the high carbon intensity in the cement production, we are not going to sit back and say it’s part of the process, what can we do,” said Botlhole.

He said the company is working on its netzero target, citing that PPC is already making a massive contribution to reduce carbon emissions through utilising fly- ash from Morupule Coal Mine ( MCM) for its cement production.

“The acquisition of raw materials locally is a huge boost for our production process and industry, this will ensure that we have cement at all times and is readily available at your nearest retail outlet,” he said.

Apart from huge consumption of fly ash, as part of decarbonisation efforts, PPC Botswana also highlighted that it has embarked on optimising and modernising its existing manufacturing plants to lessen carbon emissions.

In addition, the company has also started producing cements that are less pure, reducing power consumption.

“The initiative of multi- faceted solutions to reduce carbon footprint is part of our DNA,” said Botlhole.
