Mohammed tipped for BFL programme
UB Hawks’ director and businessman, Ali Mohammed has been tipped to take charge of the UEFA Assist programme that is currently being undertaken at Botswana Football League ( BFL) to speed- up transformation exercise for local clubs.
Following the recent resignation of BFL Chief Executive Officer, Solomon Ramochochwane, who spearheaded the exercise, there is a need to fill in a candidate to conclude the programme.
Given Mohammed’s close relations to the powers that be at Botswana Football Association ( BFA), reports indicate that, the association will give thumbsup to BFL’s proposal to have the UB Hawks director lead the programme.
Mohammed supplied the BFA national teams with water, 03, and also pledged to transport at least four ( 4) supporters to Morocco for the WAFCON finals, however the latter did not materialize.
The BFL Chairman, Nicolas Zakhem told this publication that they will not hire an individual on a permanent basis as the project is almost complete but they will engage expertise of other individuals where necessary.
“We spoke to BFA about the situation, we have someone who is currently overseeing the project, Chris Botsang, he has been there so we trust that he can lead. We are not waiting for the new CEO to proceed with the transformation exercise. We have already done a lot of work and we will not employ anyone specifically for that role and we are set to meet with BFA this afternoon to deliberate more on the matter and explore other options available,” BFL chairman shared. Contacted for a comment, Mohammed confirmed to BG Sport that, preliminary discussions between him and the BFL bosses have taken place but a decision has not been reached yet.
“They have approached me, YES, we have held talks about the role but there is nothing concrete at the moment, I haven’t decided whether I should take up the role or not. I have my own team that I am focusing on and it is taking a lot of my time. I am still evaluating the situation and we’ll see how everything goes,” Mohammed responded. Applications period for the current BFL CEO vacant post was closed on Monday and Zakhem revealed that they ( BFL) are working to appoint a new CEO before long.
When launching the UEFA Assist back in 2020, BFA President, Maclean Letshwiti stated that the core responsibility of the initiative is to implement the defined 12 fields of action, as contained in the FIFA Botswana Strategic Plan of June 2020. The 12 points of action aimed at transforming football within all stakeholders includes; new governance and business model, corporate identity, communication strategy, marketing strategy, broadcasting rights, sponsorship, technology, players, coaches and referees, fans, sustainable football, women football league and lastly, corporate social responsibility.
BFA’s Chief Executive Officer, Mfolo Edwin Mfolo previously told this publication that the project was at 80percent to completion, with the association left to implement the last stages of the project and provide oversight.
