BMD focuses on rebuilding structures

- Nicholas Mokwena

Botswana Movement for Democracy ( BMD) will focus its energy on rebuilding its structures before thinking of participating immediately in any opposition coalitions.

This is one of the party’s resolutions passed at the 6th BMD Congress in Mahalapye. The BMD also resolved that; an amendment be enacted to the Electoral Act to allow counting of ballots at polling stations, the Independent Electoral Commission reintroduce the indelible ink that was used before during elections. The party has also called for Diaspora and Polling Officers’ votes to be counted immediately after casting their votes and the results be immediately made available to all stakeholders involved for record- keeping.

It has called for the rejection of the use of Electronic Voting Machine and any form of electronic voting devices. BMD also resolved to throw its weight behind the call for political party funding by the State.

Newly- elected BMD Secretary General, Bakang Kolobe, said their resolutions are a demonstration of their continued unselfish devotion, unrivalled and unravelled dedication and sincere commitment to transforming the society and to setting the country on course to compete with others in the Southern African region and elsewhere in the world. Kolobe said in recognition of that epoch- making period, the Movement, through the rebuilding efforts, is putting together a tapestry whose fabric connects decades of human interactions across the nation with a specific call for all to join in, as they all must be fighting for a Better Botswana together.

He stated that the search for common goals in equality is more important in strengthening their commitment to fighting any form of injustice including the maladministration and misrule of Botswana.

“We continue to encourage Batswana to stand up and join the Movement and assist Botswana to liberate itself and indeed ourselves from the captured capitalists masquerading as leaders. We encourage Batswana to join the Movement and proactively fight for a fully democratic and economically viable and stable Botswana.

“We call on all the citizens of this once great nation to join hands with the Movement as we continue fighting for a better Botswana together. We call on all Batswana for an unstinting support as we continue to fight for a better Botswana together”, Kolobe said.

He pointed out that BMD members have demonstrated, throughout the life of the organisation, the ability to accomplish enormous tasks in their hands. Kolobe stated that members should therefore be thanked for showing strong and firm leadership and gratitude should be expressed to those who have sacrificed their time and resources to continue fighting for the liberation of Botswana and Batswana from the clutches of the ruthless captured capitalist government.

“We salute all the BMD members who have made an indelible impression upon their communities and Botswana at large in staying loyal to the Movement and through their participation in the rebuilding of the BMD, of which the first step was the Mahalapye congress.

“We also sincerely appreciate all the members who could not make it to Mahalapye but were with us in spirit. Thank you kindly for choosing and believing in the BMD. Your loyalty and perseverance epitomises ‘ strife and struggle’ not only for the Movement but also for the liberation of Botswana and all Batswana as we reignite our fight for a better Botswana for all,” the Secretary General said.
