Botswana fears human trafficking- induced greylisting

-

The government is working around the clock to produce a detailed Anti Human Trafficking national action plan of 2023/ 28 as issues of human trafficking continue to escalate.

Deputy chairperson of the human trafficking prohibition committee, Geoffrey Gare says they are working hard to ensure that the issue of human trafficking does not become a crisis that may lead to the nation being grey- listed. He stated that it is pivotal that all other stakeholders are aware of the current situation and ways in which the nation can progress towards making the country a safer place for all. The Manager of Anti Human Trafficking in the Ministry of Defence, Justice and Security, Madoda Nasha explained that the newly- established national drafting committee is charged with the responsibility of drafting Botswana’s next anti human trafficking plan. He noted that investigations into human trafficking are increasing locally, citing that more and more people are lured into jobs in nations that do not require visas like the United Kingdom. Nasha explained that they are looking into ways of curbing such issues. Furthermore, the plan that they are working on will include the private sector and other stakeholders to ensure that no sector is left behind in keeping the ordinary Motswana safe. He said that unemployment, instability and gender based violence can be push factors to lure people into human trafficking. He urged people not to blindly accept job offers from anyone locally and internationally.
