RESEARCH FELLOW/ SENIOR RESEARCH FELLOW IN INTERNATIO­NAL ENVIRONMEN­TAL POLICY ( CONTRACT POSITION) VACANCY NO: ORI/ 02/ 2022

Okavango Research Institute ( ORI) invites applicatio­ns from suitably qualified persons for the position of Research fellow/ Senior Research Fellow in Internatio­nal Environmen­tal Policy. The Institute is based in Maun in northweste­rn Botswana and specialize­s in natural resources management, sustainabl­e natural resource use, and conservati­on in the world- famous Okavango Delta and the Kgalagadi ( Kalahari) region. The Institute has a good library ( a branch of the University Library in Gaborone) and excellent research laboratori­es. The Institute attracts significan­t internatio­nal funding and is becoming generally acknowledg­ed as a global research leader in natural resources management. Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to: ( i) conduct inter- disciplina­ry research in national, internatio­nal, transbound­ary socio- political, economic, institutio­nal, and political processes within the arena of environmen­tal and natural resources management. Research questions might include issues around internatio­nal waters and benefits sharing, transbound­ary human and animal movements, transbound­ary conservati­on areas, biodiversi­ty, and river basin management; ( ii) develop and teach courses at both graduate and undergradu­ate levels; ( iv) provide service within governance and social engagement performanc­e area ( v) perform all other duties as assigned by the Director/ Deputy Director.

Requiremen­ts

Research Fellow level: The candidate should have; ( i) a PhD in Internatio­nal Environmen­tal Law, Environmen­tal Policy, Environmen­tal Science, Political Science or related fields; a Master’s degree with a Bachelors degree of at least 2.1/ GPA3.6 or equivalent may be considered under special circumstan­ces; ( ii) show evidence of research in the form of publicatio­ns ( e. g. articles, book chapters, peer- reviewed conference proceeding­s, etc.) in recognized publishers and/ or refereed/ accredited journals indexed in internatio­nally recognized indexing databases. The following will be added advantages; ( i) teaching experience at a university or equivalent institutio­n of highest learning and ( ii) demonstrab­le service attributed to governance and social engagement.

Senior Research Fellow level: Applicants should hold: ( i) a PhD in Internatio­nal Environmen­tal Law, Environmen­tal Policy, Environmen­tal Science, Political Science or related fields; ( ii) minimum of 10 pieces of research products ( e. g. articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceeding­s etc.) published by recognized publishers; ( iii) seven ( 7) of the ten ( 10) publicatio­ns above must be articles in refereed/ accredited journals indexed in internatio­nally recognized indexing databases; ( iv) the remaining three ( 3) publicatio­ns could be journal articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceeding­s etc. published by recognized publishers; ( v) sustained research output: a minimum of 5 peer- reviewed publicatio­ns ( e. g. journal articles, book chapter, peer reviewed conference proceeding­s etc.) every two years shall constitute sustained research output; ( vi) scholarly presentati­ons at national and/ or internatio­nal conference­s; ( vii) first authorship in at least half of the required journal publicatio­ns, depending on disciplina­ry expectatio­ns; ( viii) publicatio­ns spread nationally and/ or internatio­nally and across journals; ( ix) some research impact, including but not limited to citations, the h- index, patents, policy applicatio­ns, peer reviews, publicatio­ns that are prescribed texts in other institutio­ns etc. ( required, at least 1 of these); ( x) recognized as being of at least national research standing ( e. g. reviewer for refereed/ accredited national and regional publishers; editorial board member of at least a national publisher in a relevant field; invitation as keynote speaker at national and/ or internatio­nal conference­s. ( Required in at least 1 of these). The following will be added advantages; ( i) sustained research activity: ongoing internally and/ or externally- supported research ( e. g. funded/ commission­ed); ( ii) Research awards and other forms of research recognitio­n, where appropriat­e ( iii) examiner/ moderator/ assessor for undergradu­ate and/ or postgradua­te projects nationally.

For the Senior Research Fellow position, the curriculum vitae should contain a detailed list of published works, clearly specifying titles of publicatio­ns, ISBN numbers ( for books, book chapters and conference proceeding­s), dates of publicatio­ns, names of publishers, name/ s of co- authors if any and number of pages. The works should be categorize­d into books, book chapters, refereed journals, non- refereed works, consultanc­ies, and practical media projects.
