RESEARCH FELLOW/ SENIOR RESEARCH FELLOW IN INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY ( CONTRACT POSITION) VACANCY NO: ORI/ 02/ 2022
Okavango Research Institute ( ORI) invites applications from suitably qualified persons for the position of Research fellow/ Senior Research Fellow in International Environmental Policy. The Institute is based in Maun in northwestern Botswana and specializes in natural resources management, sustainable natural resource use, and conservation in the world- famous Okavango Delta and the Kgalagadi ( Kalahari) region. The Institute has a good library ( a branch of the University Library in Gaborone) and excellent research laboratories. The Institute attracts significant international funding and is becoming generally acknowledged as a global research leader in natural resources management. Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to: ( i) conduct inter- disciplinary research in national, international, transboundary socio- political, economic, institutional, and political processes within the arena of environmental and natural resources management. Research questions might include issues around international waters and benefits sharing, transboundary human and animal movements, transboundary conservation areas, biodiversity, and river basin management; ( ii) develop and teach courses at both graduate and undergraduate levels; ( iv) provide service within governance and social engagement performance area ( v) perform all other duties as assigned by the Director/ Deputy Director.
Requirements
Research Fellow level: The candidate should have; ( i) a PhD in International Environmental Law, Environmental Policy, Environmental Science, Political Science or related fields; a Master’s degree with a Bachelors degree of at least 2.1/ GPA3.6 or equivalent may be considered under special circumstances; ( ii) show evidence of research in the form of publications ( e. g. articles, book chapters, peer- reviewed conference proceedings, etc.) in recognized publishers and/ or refereed/ accredited journals indexed in internationally recognized indexing databases. The following will be added advantages; ( i) teaching experience at a university or equivalent institution of highest learning and ( ii) demonstrable service attributed to governance and social engagement.
Senior Research Fellow level: Applicants should hold: ( i) a PhD in International Environmental Law, Environmental Policy, Environmental Science, Political Science or related fields; ( ii) minimum of 10 pieces of research products ( e. g. articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings etc.) published by recognized publishers; ( iii) seven ( 7) of the ten ( 10) publications above must be articles in refereed/ accredited journals indexed in internationally recognized indexing databases; ( iv) the remaining three ( 3) publications could be journal articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings etc. published by recognized publishers; ( v) sustained research output: a minimum of 5 peer- reviewed publications ( e. g. journal articles, book chapter, peer reviewed conference proceedings etc.) every two years shall constitute sustained research output; ( vi) scholarly presentations at national and/ or international conferences; ( vii) first authorship in at least half of the required journal publications, depending on disciplinary expectations; ( viii) publications spread nationally and/ or internationally and across journals; ( ix) some research impact, including but not limited to citations, the h- index, patents, policy applications, peer reviews, publications that are prescribed texts in other institutions etc. ( required, at least 1 of these); ( x) recognized as being of at least national research standing ( e. g. reviewer for refereed/ accredited national and regional publishers; editorial board member of at least a national publisher in a relevant field; invitation as keynote speaker at national and/ or international conferences. ( Required in at least 1 of these). The following will be added advantages; ( i) sustained research activity: ongoing internally and/ or externally- supported research ( e. g. funded/ commissioned); ( ii) Research awards and other forms of research recognition, where appropriate ( iii) examiner/ moderator/ assessor for undergraduate and/ or postgraduate projects nationally.
For the Senior Research Fellow position, the curriculum vitae should contain a detailed list of published works, clearly specifying titles of publications, ISBN numbers ( for books, book chapters and conference proceedings), dates of publications, names of publishers, name/ s of co- authors if any and number of pages. The works should be categorized into books, book chapters, refereed journals, non- refereed works, consultancies, and practical media projects.
